Laparoscopic Surgery for Infertility

Surgical procedures done through Laparoscopy involves inserting a telescope like a device into a small cut or insertion made through the navel (umbilicus). This permits an internal view of the abdominal and pelvic organs such as the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. It helps to identify defects such as endometriosis, scar tissue, and fibroid tumors found in the abdominal cavity.

Laparoscopic Surgery Vs Conventional Surgery:

Laparoscopic Surgery: It is less invasive and scarring is minimal. Each cut made is not more that 1cms and hence heals very quickly and easily. It can be done under general anesthesia.

Conventional Surgery: A huge cut is made on the bikini line (Lower Abdomen) which is about 10 cms long. It is done under general anesthesia.

When should I opt for surgery ?

On the first consultation with the doctor simple indications can be isolated.

1) Vaginal pain on the penetration of male sex organ causing reduced satisfaction during intercourse. On examination, it can be identified that the vagina is tight and male organ has not completely entered the vagina.
2) The heavy flow of blood during regular periods. This can be ruled out by examination for enlarged fibroids in the uterus.
3) Painful and heavy period flow along with pain during in-depth penetration intercourse. A proper examination of the vagina may show a tender thickened tissue area seen at the top of the vagina, which is an indication of endometriosis.
4) History of past surgery where examination indicates uterus is fixed in one position instead of being movable. This can mean that there are fibrous tissue growths formed as a result of injury during previous surgery.
5) If you have had previously terminated pregnancies with a partner and still not able to conceive with the same partner. This can mean that your termination of pregnancy could have caused an infection and blocked the fallopian tubes, causing infertility.
